For a big travel industry company
This client sells airline tickets from a variety of airlines. We protect our clients' identification so their competitors don't know who they're working with, so the names and keywords are going to be blurred out, but the data (from third party verification sources) is still shown.

This client hired us to improve their search rank for a variety of ticket related keywords. Let's get started!
They came to us in 2012 with a list of keywords they wanted to rank for. We took a look and saw some big search numbers; their main keyword gets 74,000 searches per month! That means if they could get to the top 5, they would likely get 20,000 visitors to their site per month from this keyword alone(more on their conversions and puchases later).
When they started, as you can see from the chart, they were in position 400 and getting 0 visitors to their site. This means they were on page 40 and no one saw them. Do you ever go to page 40 when searching? We don't.
We took a look at their site and found that, unlike many, they actually had adequate onpage SEO. When we did our website audit, we didn't find any problems at all! This means their site was set up in a way that Google likes, and we didn't have to make any changes, which means we did get busy with linkbuilding and link outreach sooner, which means they started to get results faster.
The next step was to do keyword research. Quite often, we find the keywords that someone wants to rank for are not the best keywords available. Electing keywords that people search for to do the thing you want yields the best results. Fot this part of the conversation we worked with them topinpoint the best keywords.
The following step was to do competitor analysis. This serves a few functions, but mostly it's to see what they're doing so we can do it better, and to see what they're not doing, so we can take advantage of it. Using a variety of in-house methods and commercial tools, we are able to see specifically what a client's competitors are doing and formulate a plan to surpass it.
The last an ongoing step is link building, which can exist as link outreach and linking from a portfolio of sites. One of the events Google uses to determine the relevance of a site is links from relevant authoritative sites. Getting these links can be difficult, because usually what people want to do is email everyone they locate with a similar site and ask for a link. If you've ever tried this, you know that most people do not really reply to this, and all of your asking might be for nought! We use a variety of methods and relationships to get our clients the links they need, and as you can see from the chart below, they were able to move from position 400 (0 visits per month) to position 3 for this keyword with 74,000 searches per month, and bring in over 20,000 visitors per month from one keyword.
Now repeat this process for their other keywords and you have a happy client getting tons of traffic.
But wait?
Who cares about ranking, what about money?! With a 4% conversion rate (remember we picked highly specified keywords), this site is making close to 800 sales per month. Multiply that by the price of an airline ticket and you might know how much money they're making from just this keyword.
Now extrapolate that to the additional keywords we did for their site.
